The Tampa Bay Rays are suddenly breathing down the necks of the Boston Red Sox for the AL’s wild-card spot. The Rays are in Baltimore starting tonight before facing Boston at Fenway Park after sweeping the Sox over the weekend. Jeff Niemann gets the ball tonight in a game the Rays simply must – and should – win. Bet on Tampa Bay-Baltimore and every game at Wager Web Sportsbook.
Tampa Bay at Baltimore – Rays RHP Jeff Niemann (9-7, 4.07) vs. Orioles LHP Zach Britton (-9-, 4.33). Niemann is looking to bounce back after another rough outing on Tuesday. The right-hander gave up seven runs on nine hits in 4 2/3 innings. He’s lost his last two decisions, both against the Rangers. Britton beat the Rays on Sept. 2 in St. Petersburg, allowing four hits and two runs in six innings. The lefty has won three of his past four starts after allowing five hits and four runs to the Yankees in a no-decision in New York on Sept. 7.
Detroit at Chicago White Sox – Tigers RHP Rick Porcello (13-8, 4.87) vs. White Sox LHP John Danks (6-11, 4.09). Porcello showed the efficient, sinkerballing form the Detroit Tigers want to see from him down the stretch, tossing 6 1/3 innings of one-run ball over just 75 pitches Tuesday against the Indians. He induced 13 ground-ball outs. Aside from a rough third inning, Danks was solid in his outing against the Twins. A one-out walk cost the left-hander, though, as the Twins plated four runs in the inning. Danks gave up five runs (four earned) over six innings.
LA Angels at Oakland – Angels RHP Joel Pineiro (6-6, 5.11) vs. A’s LHP Gio Gonzalez (12-12, 3.43). Finally in tune with his sinker and offspeed stuff after a difficult season, Pineiro looks to make up for lost time with his starts down the stretch. He’s coming off his best game of the season, against the Twins. He’ll use it as a springboard. Gonzalez was tagged for six earned runs in a loss to the Royals on Tuesday, giving up 10 hits and three walks with four strikeouts in five frames. He’s 2-1 with a 1.89 ERA and 20 strikeouts through 19 innings in three starts vs. the Angels this year.
NY Yankees at Seattle – Yankees RHP Phil Hughes (4-5, 6.41) vs. Mariners RHP Felix Hernandez (14-11, 3.15). Hughes gave up two runs over six innings in the Yankees’ win over Baltimore on Tuesday. Hernandez, the Mariners’ ace, has been strong down the stretch, going 6-2 with a 2.28 ERA over his last eight starts, including back-to-back 2-1 wins over the Angels. He loves pitching against the Yankees as well (6-3, 2.82 in 10 career starts).
